  What is a UTI?

 

     A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of the urinary tract from microbes. The common infections in humans. Most UTIs are caused when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra and begin to multiply in the bladder.

     UTI may occur anywhere in the urinary system, which is made up of kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Most commonly UTIs affects the lower urinary tract which involves the urethra and bladder. Rarely, it affects the ureters and kidneys, which are in the upper tract. The upper urinary tract that causes UTI infection is more severe than lower tract UTIs.

 Causes of UTIs

 

     UTIs may be caused due to anything that irritates the urinary tract or reduces bladder emptying. The following are some factors that increase the risk of getting UTIs:
  • Urinary tract obstructions or blockages
  • Prolonged use of urinary catheters
  • Kidney stones
  • Pregnancy
  • Age — older adults are more likely to get UTIs
  • Diabetes
  • Abnormally developed urinary structures from birth
  • A weakened immune system

 

Symptoms of UTIs


Urinary tract infections may include the following signs and symptoms, Sometimes it also occurs without symptoms:
  • Increased urgency of urination
  • Passing frequent, small amounts of urine
  • Urine that appears cloudy
  • Urine that has a strong odor
  • A sign of blood in the urine
  • Pelvic pain in women and rectal pain in men
  • Burning with urination
  • Increased frequency of urination without passing much urine
  • Cloudy urine

Types of urinary tract infection

 

The signs and symptoms of each type of UTIs are more specific, depending up on the part of the urinary tract which is infected.

Kidneys: If the infection affects the kidneys, it may result in upper back and side pain. Some people may have a high fever, shaking, chills, nausea, and vomiting.

Bladder: If UTI affects the bladder, the symptoms will be lower abdomen discomfort, pelvic pressure, Frequent or painful urination and blood in urine.

Urethra (urethritis): If urethra is infected, there will be a discharge and burning with urination.
